And we could not even say that it contains everything and its opposite! In a few words Rome is Rome. It's like a beautiful, well cared for, well fed, lazy, silly yet genial mistress. The city of Rome will lure you with its marvellous settings, with all the remains of its imperial past, with its outstanding hotels, with its restaurants, its food, with its indolent dawns and its heart stopping sunsets. If you have never been there you will have to know a few things before you get on the spot. First of all try to get in the right mood, you will experience a complete new lifestyle. The Romans are as lazy as their home. This lazyness, though, does not apply when they are driving their cars, motorcycles or mopeds in the city traffic. The streets of Rome get jammed pretty easily, it takes just a few seconds to get stuck in traffic. And the romans will do whatever they can to avoid such event. They simply drive like crazy! Dodging pedestrians, sidewalks, bikers and everything that they might encounter in their way, just to get to their appointment... late! Rarely a real roman gets somewhere on time. Yet, this scary custom is just as fascinating as everything else in the city of Rome. The second thing is that you must realize that, if you are going to be there for just a few days, you probably will not be able to see all the things that this magnificent city has to offer. Museums (Vatican Museums, Villa Borghese Gallery just to name a few), remains of the golden age of the Roman Empire, its marvellous churches, the Vatican, the well known shopping streets (via Condotti, via del Corso, via Cola di Rienzo for example), the Spanish Steps, the never ending nightlife (Campo de' Fiori, Testaccio or Trastevere are renowned for their pubs, discos and restaurants), there so much to see and to do that you will have to plan your trip well in advance. |
